CHARACTER
CHARACTER NAME: Ted Wiggins (he speaks for the trees)
SERIES: The Lorax movieverse
CANON POINT: Just before he causes a spontaneous musical number. Which is the song “Let it Grow” beteedubs
LOSS: Memories of Audrey. She was basically his entire reason for initially finding out about trees, and having the enormous crush also makes her uber important. Except… oops, who was she again? He knows he investigating trees for a reason but doesn’t now what it is.

ABOUT THE CHARACTER: Ted’s most defining feature is probably his fierce determination. Once he fixes on a goal he goes to any length in order to achieve it. Whether it’s buying a toy plane just to have an excuse to see Audrey or jumping his scooter over the tops of buildings to reach the Once-ler, Ted gives one hundred percent to everything he does. He can be incredibly focused for a child his age, growing up in a world like Thneedville that catered to short attention spans. When he is threatened by O’Hare, the most powerful man in town, Ted refuses to back down from his plans to meet the Once-ler, and later plant a tree. Ted is “undeterred by reality”, as the Once-ler put it. He knows what he wants and he will do what it takes to make it happen.

Another important quality about him is that Ted is a dreamer. He is able to think outside the box to solve problems. This is probably an unusual quality in his world. His imagination can get a little overactive at times, like his fantasies about kissing Audrey. But it’s this quality that makes him question things and prompts him to seek out answers about trees. And later on, it’s also this quality that gives him hope for change when he’s entrusted with the last seed.

Over the course of his journey Ted grows a little and becomes a bit more mature. In the beginning his motivation for finding out about trees was purely to impress Audrey. He got impatient during the first part of the Once-ler’s story, wanting to hurry it along so he could get a tree for her. But as he heard more of the Once-ler’s story he began to care more about the trees themselves and what they meant for his valley. By the time he heard the entire story he truly cared about them and wanted to help make others care too.

He also grew to care about the Once-ler. Because he’s a kid Ted often acts annoyed with the adults in his life, like his family and the Once-ler. He gets embarrassed around them and flustered when his grandmother meets Audrey. But it’s clear he still cares because he’s willing to take his grandmother shopping with him. Ted’s gesture of bringing marshmallows was a way for him to show he cared about the Once-ler. Not to mention going to more and more drastic lengths just to hear the old man’s story.

Ted is the first person to leave town since the walls were put up to block Thneedville from the truth of Truffula Valley. Before then he spent his entire life surrounded by the glitz and plastic of Thneedville. Seeing the valley was probably a shocking and frightening experience for him, but he rode through anyway. Not only that, but he went back to that desolate place two more times even as it grew increasingly more dangerous for him to do so. It took a lot of bravery for Ted to do that, and to fight against a powerful man like O’Hare.

ABILITIES: Being alive after twelve years of breathing fake air and eating food with no actual nutritional value. Also an “out of the box” problem-solver. Able to operate heavy machinery such as bulldozers

THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: Two times now Ted ventured beyond the safety of Thneedville’s walls. The first time chilled him more than he expected and even when he was ready for it, the second time wasn’t much better. But he needed to hear the rest of the story; he needed to know what happened to the trees, the animals, the Lorax, everything the Once-ler talked about. He was sure that this time the Once-ler was definitely going to get to that part of his story.

That was when Ted hit a road-block: he couldn’t get up the wall as usual. What now? Ted never really thought about the walls before he started seeing the Once-ler. They were always just part of the town, something as common as the ski slopes. But now that he experienced the outside he was starting to see the walls for what they were: restricting, enclosed pieces of steel keeping everyone inside. More immediately, it was keeping Ted from hearing the rest of the Once-ler’s story.

He would find a way outside no matter what. His mind whirred to come up with a “how”. Ted looked around hoping for inspiration when his eyes landed on the buildings. The architecture of Thneedville was always a little unusual and now it looked like it was actually going to be useful.

Ted strapped on his goggles to gear up for what he was about to do, starting up the engine on his scooter. He knew this plan was risky and dangerous but he wasn’t going to let that stop him. Before he left he made sure the marshmallows were secure; he didn’t want to lose them and have nothing for the Once-ler when he finally made it to the man’s Lerkim.

Ted hadn’t considered how he would get back into town once he was out. At the moment he was tackling one impossible feat at a time.
